Brookside Road closure
We're carrying out work in Bedhampton which will require the closure of a small section of Brookside Road.
This closure will be in place from 17th February 2025 for two weeks. This is while we carry out a survey on a mains pipeline which runs beneath the road.
In order to safely gain access to the pipeline, we will need to close both lanes of this section of the road for the duration of the work. We will ensure all properties on Brookside Road are accessible while this takes place.
Diversion
A diversion will be in place via Bedhampton Road, King's Croft Lane and Bidbury Lane.
We understand that, given that King's Croft Lane is a single lane road, this is not an ideal solution and we are liaising with local residents and businesses directly about this.
We have investigated our construction methods in detail and have concluded that there is no way of safely completing our works under a single lane closure, so allowing traffic to continue using Brookside Road would not be possible.
We are, however, continuing to consider actions we can take to minimise disruption to residents.
As a first step, we’re looking for efficiencies in how we complete these works, to make sure the road is closed for the minimum time necessary.
As works commence, we will also very closely monitor traffic on King's Croft Lane and if problems arise, we will implement additional traffic management measures. This could include positioning traffic marshals at either end of the road to manage the flow of vehicles.
We appreciate that unfortunately some disruption is inevitable, and we would like to sincerely apologise in advance for this.
Why are we carrying out this work?
This work is part of our flagship Havant Thicket Reservoir project, the first major UK reservoir to be created in more than 30 years. First and foremost an environmentally-led scheme, the new reservoir will provide a sustainable source of water, meaning less water needs to be taken from two precious chalk streams in Hampshire – the River Test and River Itchen.
We received formal planning consent for the scheme in 2021 and construction has now officially started on site. Once operational, water from the reservoir will be transported to our Farlington Water Treatment Works, via this main, to be treated to drinking water standards. We will then transport the water to the west of our supply area, increasing our resilience and enabling us to move supplies around the region quickly and efficiently.
